Living Well at the Well & Being Spa

Living Well at the Well & Being Spa

One of my favorite things about traveling as a couple is being able to carve out some time to fully relax. By this I mean not only to recharge as a couple, but also unwind my own personal batteries. I like to do this by exercising and booking some really nice spa services. When I’m researching a resort or a destination to visit, this is one of the most important amenities I look for. During our recent ‘mostly business’ trip to Scottsdale, Arizona, we had the privledge of staying at the beautiful, AAA 5-Diamond Award-Winning Fairmont Scottsdale Princess Resort. We’ve stayed here a handful of times in the past and it never gets old! Read on to learn all about Living Well at the Well & Being Spa at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess.

Living Well at the Well & Being Spa

Located on the property of the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess Resort, the Well & Being Spa offers an unique fusion of wellness and spa treatments unlike any other spa I’ve experienced.

The Well & Being Spa at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess has been recognized as one of USA Today’s “10 Best” Reader’s Choice Top 10 Winner Best Hotel Spa. Once you experience it, it’s easy to see why Living Well at the Well & Being Spa should be next on your list!

Amenities available with a day pass or spa service:

Men’s & Women’s Private Changing Areas & Locker Storage

I’ve been able to visit many resort spas over the years. I must admit, the Well & Being Spa’s locker, bathroom and changing area is unparalleled!

From the plush robes, luxurious towels and comfy sandals each person receives in their own individual locker, to the luxurious apothecary products placed in each shower stall and to the large spaces they set aside for completing your routine once you’re rejuvenated for the day…living well has never been easier at the Well & Being Spa. This facility has placed guest comfort as its top priority!

Hot Therapeutic Whirlpool

This is the spot where I always start my spa circuit at the Well & Being Spa. Ahhh…the relaxing whirlpool hottub complete with a little waterfall feature. It’s heaven on Earth.

This beautiful whirlpool has what I like to call “therapy-level jets.” The jets are forceful enough to be effective on tight muscles, but still relaxing and invigorating.

The Hot Therapeutic Whirlpool is on the right, Cold Plunge Pool on the left.

Cold Plunge Pool

After I sit in the Hot Therapeutic Whirlpool tub for at least 10-15 minutes to untie those deep-seated knots, I take a few steps and plunge right into the cold pool! You may be thinking–NO WAY-BRRR! But let me tell you, it’s one of the most invigorating feelings after being in a very warm tub for a while!

There are many physical benefits for those individuals seeking pain relief, too. Cold pools can help to release endorphins, constrict blood vessels and help to reduce swelling and inflammation in damaged tissues. As a runner and a mom who’s had three babies, I have some areas that have greatly benefited from this cold plunge pool!

Expert Tip: WHEN you visit this gorgeous spa, do not skip this Cold Plunge Pool after your stint in the Hot Therapeutic Tub.

Wet Steam Room

My husband is a huge fan of the Well & Being’s Wet Steam Room. I am as well, but you can catch him relaxing in there each day of our stay! Their wet steam room is kept at a very balmy temperature complete with an intense amount of humidity. It is so steamy in the Wet Steam Room that when you relax in it, you can hear the moisture droplets dripping from the ceiling and benches! Definitely consider spending 10 minutes in this environment–breathing deeply–letting that humid air penetrate every square inch of your body.

Eucalyptus Inhalation Room

This relaxing room requires that you put that cozy robe back on in order to enjoy it. The Eucalyptus Inhalation Room is kept at room temperature, around 68-70 degrees. So…sit back on the beautifully-designed, comfortably-cushioned bench and put your feet up. This room is designed with the idea that you spend about 10 minutes or so taking in deep breaths of the intoxicating scent of Eucalyptus. Therapeutic grade Eucalyptus is known to open the airways, clear the mind and reduce tension.

Swedish Dry Sauna

The Well & Being’s Spa would not be complete without the Swedish-style Dry Sauna. Even though the spa already boasts an impressive humid steam-room, taking a few minutes to relax in the traditional dry sauna is an important part of the spa circuit.

Benefits of a dry sauna include relaxation, possible improvement in cardiac fitness levels and it can also assist in detoxification. We can all use an occasional detox, right?!

Personally, I’ve found that if I have a difficult time staying in the wet steam room (because the high heat + steam can make it hard to breathe sometimes), relaxing in a dry sauna can provide many of the same benefits, but the environment can be much more tolerable.

Swiss Shower

I find that it’s really nice to end my spa circuit with the Swiss Shower. I think taking in a nice, therapeutic shower with jets spraying at me from different angles and heights is not only helpful in washing off, but also deeply relaxing.

Co-Ed Grotto Waterfall

Recently, I discovered that this space in the spa is my new favorite!

The stairwell on the right leads to the rooftop pool, while the whirlpool in the back is the hidden grotto-style co-ed whirlpool.

This gorgeous, co-ed, grotto-style hot therapeutic pool is complete with several waterfalls that cascade down from overhead. As the different sections of water fall from above, the streams provide varying levels of pressure, almost acting as a mini-massage to the neck, shoulders and upper back.

I probably sat in the grotto-pool for over 30 minutes each day that I visited the spa! What a treasure to find!

Rooftop Adults-Only Pool with Private Cabanas

For the times we have visited the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess and the air temperatures have been warm enough to utilize the pool, I make sure to indulge in the adults-only rooftop pool at the Well & Being Spa as much as I can!

This gorgeous space is the stuff my pool dreams are made of!

It’s no secret that the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess has several incredible pools, however, there’s something extra special about the rooftop pool at the Well & Being Spa.

It tends to be quiet, especially during the week. I can sneak up there with my coffee and a good book and relax in the warm Arizona sunshine.

It’s really private since the only people who have access to it are individuals at the spa for the day. The privacy almost makes you feel like you’re on a different planet surrounded by the gorgeous Arizona mountains in the background. It’s really special.

Lounge chairs at the rooftop pool. Some are situated for sun, others for a little shade. Perfection.

The food and bar service at the rooftop pool is outstanding! Even if I’m contemplating the idea of a salad (or mimosa), the staff at the rooftop pool has already anticipated this and they’ve handed me a menu! It’s simply amazing!

Also, I should note that each time I visit the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess, I seem to forget my sunscreen. Why?! (Eeeek! I know. I need a good wrist-slap.) But alas, the Well & Being Spa rooftop pool has me covered. They have these individually-portioned cups of sunscreen and aloe vera gel for those of us who forget. They are always looking out for our safety and overall well-being. Just another note of luxury at this unbelievable spa facility.

Living Well With Ultra-Premium Spa Treatments

I like to designate the treatments one receives at the Well & Being Spa as “ultra premium.” These massage therapists, estheticians and stylists don’t just deliver the prescribed service you sign up for. They hand-tailor every aspect of your experience to your unique individual needs.

Over the years that my husband and I have been traveling to the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess for work, I have had the privledge of enjoying several treatments at the Well & Being Spa. The Well & Being Spa offers a complete menu of services: massages, facials, body scrubs and wraps, full salon services, acupuncture, individualized wellness plans and so much more!

During some visits, I need a good deep-tissue massage, while other times I want a relaxing, hydrating facial or a really good mani-pedi. I’m happy to report that each service I’ve had has far-exceeded my expectations!

Favorite Spa Treatments

Alpine Arnica Deep Tissue Massage

I’ve had probably 100+ massages in my life performed by dozens of therapists over 15+ years (I am not exaggerating by any stretch of the imagination–remember, I’m an almost 40 year old mama to 3 boys, a runner and I lead a very active lifestyle–I have some knots!) I can, without a shadow of a doubt, tell you that the Alpine Arnica Deep Tissue Massage will blow your mind.

It is THE.VERY.BEST. massage I’ve ever had.

Ever.

Whoa. Now that’s a big statement.

And…I’ll even take it a step further. Each time I’ve had this particular treatment (yes, I’ve indulged in it on multiple occasions while visiting the Well & Being Spa), I walk away saying the same thing.

BEST. MASSAGE. EVER.

massage therapy at the Well & Being Spa
Individualized massage therapy at the Well & Being Spa

Not only is this massage deep tissue–meaning you can communicate with your massage therapist to determine what level of “deep” you can comfortably handle–but they apply an Arnica-based gel during the massage to help unwind those deeply-seated knots in your muscles. This leaves a lasting effect long after the massage is complete.

I will not pretend to understand what type of training these massage therapists go through in order to do what they do…but it’s an unbelievable, magical experience. I walk away feeling refreshed, rejuvenated, un-wound, bendy, loosey-goosey…just ALL the good feels.

Expert Tip: Please, if you can afford the time and money, do yourself a favor and book the 90-minute massage. The 60-minute massage is absolute perfection, BUT it’s almost a tease. Go with the full-monty, if you can!

Massage Options at the Well & Being Spa include:

  • Himalayan Salt Stone ~ 60 | 90 minute
  • Aromatherapy ~ 60 | 90 minute

Rejuvenate/Opulence Facial Treatment

During our most recent visit to the Well & Being Spa, we visited in early February and my skin was screaming for some serious exfoliation and hydration!

Initially, when I booked the facial, I just chose one that sounded appropriate for my needs. The Well & Being Spa appointment coordinators mentioned that if the esthetician sees that she needs to make an adjustment to achieve the results that I want, then she’ll change it during the appointment time. I love this because I had no idea what my skin needed…but Rose, my amazing esthetician did!

Right away, my esthetician mentioned that I needed to exfoliate (because hello, dry flaking skin!) and then deeply hydrate! She suggested the Rejuvenate/Opulence Facial Treatment. This facial uses oxygen under pressure (a little machine similar to a small airbrush) to deliver layers of hyaluronic acid, vitamins and powerful antioxidants to hydrate my very dull, thirsty skin.

WOWZA. I left there just glistening. I’m not kidding…my skin has never been that smooth in my entire life! All of the dead, dry, dull skin was removed and then the fresh, healthy skin layers underneath were deeply hydrated. I was very shiny after the facial, but by the end of the day, my skin had soaked up all of the hydration and I was able to apply my makeup on a very fresh, smooth face! I highly recommend this treatment if you have dry winter skin like me!

Fitness + Nutrition = Living Well

When we travel, my husband and I like to keep up on our exercise routines. We often end up working out more when on a trip away from home! This is probably due in part to having a little more free time when on vacation and several less distractions. We can also work together and time-block our exercise time so each of us gets what we desire.

My husband loves using the fitness facility at the spa every day prior to taking his continuing education classes and I enjoy taking part in the group fitness classes at the Well & Being Spa! The shear variety of classes astounds me!

Favorite Fitness Classes

I’ve been able to take many of the classes offered through the Well & Being Spa–everything from experiencing Aerial Yoga to Barre to several different styles of yoga, pilates, spin and beyond.

Typically when I first arrive at the resort, I like to grab a current class schedule and decide in advance which classes I want to take.

Aerial Yoga Hammocks located in the Well & Being’s Atrium

Expert Tip: There are certain classes–such as Aerial Yoga and a few others–that require advanced registration due to space limitations. I’ve never had an issue getting into a class, but if there is a class you are definitely interested in, it’s a good idea to let the Spa desk know ahead of time so they are able to accommodate your request.

My all-time favorite classes are Aerial Yoga and Surfset Circuit. I really enjoyed these classes because they are very different from the usual classes I’m able to experience at my local gym.

Aerial Hammock Yoga uses a fabric hammock suspended from the ceiling which allows your body to overcome gravity as you glide and release into each pose. For someone who is really active and wants to try a more challenging and demanding style of yoga, I would highly recommend this class!

Another class I also really enjoy, that is very different from other traditional fitness classes, is the Surfset Circuit class. This class is as fun and unique as it is challenging! It’s a total-body workout, combining the use of a surfboard (think: strong core workout) with weights, bands and kettlebells. Surf’s Up, dude!

Group Fitness Classes at the Well & Being Spa include:

  • Aerial Hammock Yoga
  • Balance Motion
  • Booty Barre Fitness
  • Bungee Fitness
  • Deep Yoga Stretch/Meditation
  • Myofascial Release Yoga
  • Plyometric Intervals
  • Spin
  • Strength Training
  • Thai Chi
  • Wall Pulley Experience
  • Wall Yoga
  • Hatha Yoga
  • Kundalini Yoga
  • Restorative Yoga
  • Pilates
  • Surfset Circuit
  • TRX Fusion
  • TRX/Surfset
  • Wellfit
  • Yin Yoga

The instructors at the Well & Being Fitness Center are incredibly dedicated to their practice as instructors. You can tell from the moment you enter the class that the instructors are there to help you practice your form and technique and to assist you in your wellness journey.
